About
The Lore and Allure of The Fountain…
The Fountain, from its early beginnings as a potashery to opening as the town’s first guest house, is one of Stowe’s oldest homes. The actual “Fountain”, for which the house is named, is fed by a mountain spring. A local landmark, in Winter it becomes a beautiful towering ice sculpture that can be seen from the road.
“When the wind blows, it sometimes forms into very strange shapes.” –Zelta Norcross – the face of The Fountain for over 30 years
In 1905, businessman Charlie Burt purchased the property at auction. Local legend has it that Mr. Burt was innocently passing by on his way to Morrisville, when the auctioneer called out, “Charlie, how much do you bid!” Without stopping, he replied, “One thousand dollars.”
In 1927, the newly renovated house was opened as an inn by the Norcross family. For many years to follow, guests enjoyed the traditional North Country hospitality provided by Birdie, Ollie May, and Zelta Norcross.
