Dothan sees revenue increase thanks to May sales tax
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – The city of Dothan flexed its economic muscles with a report released on Wednesday.
The May sales tax revenue report recorded an overall increase of 8.9% over last year, adding up to nearly $600,000 in additional funds.
Local liquor tax is up 11%, or nearly $100,000, from May 2021. City leaders note that Dothan has begun including liquor tax in its monthly liquor tax report. sales tax in fiscal year 2022.
General sales and use tax increased by 8.4%, machinery and manufacturing sales tax brought in 31.8%, farm/farm tax brought in 15.9%, and agricultural tax accommodation added 2.4% compared to 2021.
The only side of revenue that saw a decline for Dothan was auto sales taxes, which fell 8.6%. City Manager Vincent Vincent attributes the decrease to a lack of new car inventory and an increase in demand for used vehicles and points out that the city collects sales tax based on the amount of the sale.
