Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, November 2 and vote for the post of mayor, as well as seats on city council, the board of education, planning and zoning and more.

Stratford Patch has asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will post candidate profiles as Election Day approaches.

Republican Kerry Whitham, 59, is running for Stratford City Council in the 5th district.

Occupation: Retirement

To live: Currently serving as an alternate to the Planning Commission, former ad hoc secretary of the BOE Curriculum Committee.

Family in government: No

The biggest problem in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it:

To keep Stratford affordable without reducing city services, we must continue to grow our big list and tax base through economic development. Many new businesses and families have come to Stratford and are proud to be living there. We welcome them all. Property values are rising as our rate per mile has seen reductions over the past four years, resulting in tax cuts for many. Kudos to our current mayor and administration for making Stratford such a great city where businesses and families want to be.

Critical differences between me and my opponent:

What separates me from my opponent is my ability to collaborate effectively across party lines, with a clear vision, to move Stratford forward. Unlike my opponent, I would have voted for a 21-22 municipal budget that would lower the thousandth tax rate.

I am 25 years at GE working for senior executives. I have held leadership positions in many community organizations such as the YMCA of Stratford, Christ Episcopal Church, the PTA, and the Beach Drive Condominium Board. I know what and how to get things done in a professional and civil manner.

Other issues:

Education is a priority for me and I will promote open communication and collaboration between school board and city council to continue to make Stratford a city where families take pride in raising their children.

What would you want voters to know about you?

I have lived in Stratford for over 35 years, raised my children and grandchildren there, and volunteered in the school system as well as many other community events in the city. I love this city and all it has to offer and I would be honored to serve as a Councilor for the 5th District and the City of Stratford as we continue to move this city forward.
